This invention relates to a method and a device capable of automatically adjusting softness of a mattress according to the sleeping position of flat or side lying. A mattress body is disposed therein with a plurality of elastic support units, each of which is composed of a first elastic body and a second elastic body. The second elastic bodies pierce out of the bottom surface of the mattress body and are subject to the support of a lifting device to adjust the softness of the mattress body through the ascending or descending position of the lifting device. The transversely arranged elastic support units are all respectively disposed on the top surface with a gravity detection element. The gravity detection elements and the lifting device are all connected with a control circuit. The status of the user lying flat or on the side can be determined by the number of gravity detection units triggered, enabling the control device to drive the lifting device ascending or descending, to make the softness of flat lying
