A process for fractionating a C4 fraction (2) by extractive distillation using a selective solvent (1) by conveying the C4 fraction (2) and the selective solvent (1) in countercurrent in the liquid phase in a distillation unit (K I, K II) and separating off an overhead stream (3) comprising the butanes and the butenes from the C4 fraction and also a bottom stream (6) comprising the selective solvent and the other components of the C4 fraction apart from the butanes and the butenes from which, in a further process step, the selective solvent is stripped as gas, wherein energy is taken off from the distillation unit (K I, K II) between the point at which the overhead stream (3) is taken off and the point at which the bottom stream (6) is taken off, is proposed.
