Summary:A base paper for release paper is formed by applying a coating agent onto a substrate in which the coating agent contains a vinyl alcoholic polymer having a polyalkylene group represented by formula (I) on a side chain. The vinyl alcoholic polymer has a viscosity average polymerization degree P of 500 to5000, a saponification degree of 20 to 99.99 mole%, and a modifying amount S of polyoxyalkylene group of 0.1-10 mole%. By which, a base paper for release paper having barrier property, oil resistance and water resistance is provided. (In the formula, R1 represents hydrogen atom or methyl group; R2 represents hydrogen atom or C1-8 alkyl group. m and n represent the repeat unit number of each oxyalkylene unit, and 1≤ m ≤ 10, 3≤ n ≤ 20.)
