Summary:Disclosed is hydrogenation of itaconic acid, including esterificating itaconic acid and alcohol to form dialkyl itaconate, hydrogenating the dialkyl itaconate to form 2-methyl-1, 4-butadiol, 2-methyl- -butyrolactone, 3-methyl- -butyrolactone, and 2-methyl-succinate. The invention utilizes two-step process such as esterificates the itaconic acid and then hydrogenates the ester rather than directly hydrogenating the itaconic acid. Therefore, the hydrogenation catalyst life is efficiently enhanced, and the water consuming problem of the skilled in the art is avoided.
