The present invention discloses a device and method capable of automatically switching to a universal serial bus (USB) host or a peripheral. In an apparatus equipped with a USB interface, the device of the present invention by itself can switch to become a USB host or a USB apparatus by means of detecting a USB handshaking protocol. The device of the present invention comprises a host mode device, a peripheral mode device, a random auto-switcher and a detecting device. The random auto-switcher randomly performs a switching connection between the host mode device and the peripheral mode device. The detecting device monitors the handshaking protocol between D+/D- pins of the USB interface and an external USB apparatus, so as to check whether it conforms to a host mode or an apparatus mode. If the disclosed device detects the external USB apparatus as a host apparatus, the device itself would switch to become a peripheral; likewise, if the disclosed device detects the external USB apparatus as a peripheral, the
