Summary:Novel malonates are of formula (I): (where R1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R2 is H or (opt. substd.) aromatic or heterocyclic gp., pref. phenyl, thienyl, furyl, pyridyl or an (opt. substd.) 1-6C alkyl, pref. furylalkyl or phenylalkyl or R1 and R2 together form an (opt. substd.) alkylene or alkenyl gp. pref. furyl- or phenyl-alkylene or -alkenyl and X is halogen, pref. Cl or F). The pentachloro- and pentafluoro-phenyl esters of cyanoacetic acid and of alpha-cyano-beta-phenyl acrylic acid and the pentachloro-phenyl ester of alpha-cyanophenyl acetic acid are specifically claimed. The prodn. of (I) is also claimed. (I) are useful in prodn. of antibiotics.
