Summary:Prodn. of 3-(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl) -N-methyl -IH-indol-5-methane sulphonamide (I) comprises decarboxylation of 2-carboxy-3-(2-dimethyl amino) ethyl)-N-methyl -IH-indol-5-methane sulphonamide (II) in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst under inert atmos. at 190-250 deg.C. Disclosed is a process for preparing 2-carboxy-3-[2- -(dimethylamino)-ethyl]-N-methyl-1H-indole-5-methanesulfonamide and its lower alkyl esters of the general formula (I) wherein R is H or a C1-6-alkyl group, which process can be characterised in that the compound of the general formula (III), wherein Alk denotes a C1-6-alkyl group and X is a leaving group, reacts with dimethylamine in an organic solvent. Thus produced dimethylaminoester of the general formula (I), wherein R is a C1-6-alkyl group, is optionally saponificated to obtain the compound of the general formula (I), wherein R is H.
