Summary:1510051 Hydroxycarbonyl compounds SNAMPROGETTI SpA 6 Jan 1976 [10 Jan 1975] 00385/76 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of a alphahydroxycarbonyl compound having the formula wherein each of R1, R2 and R3, which are the same or different, is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical or a hydrogen atom; which process comprises reacting a compound having one of the following general formulae wherein R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above, and X is an aliphatic acycloxy, aroyloxy, alkoxy or aryloxy radical; with an oxidizing mixture composed of osmium tetroxide and an alkali metal or alkali-earth metal chlorate, at a temperature in the range from 0 to 100‹ C., the chlorate being present in at least a stoichiometric amount with respect to the compound of Formula II or III. Serine is prepared by a Strecker reaction from unisolated glycolaldehyde obtained from vinyl acetate by the above method.
