Summary:1456107 Air-drying alkyd resins BAYER AG 24 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 41455/74 Heading C3R An air-drying alkyd resin having an acid number of from 3 to 30, a hydroxyl number of from 20 to 100, an average molecular weight of from 2000 to 10,000 nad an oil length of from 16 to 71%, is derived from a dicarboxylic acid, two different alcohols and an unsaturated fatty acid or a fat or oil containing residue of an unsaturated fatty acid, wherein the molar ratio of the alcohols to the dicarboxylic acid is from 0À8 : 1 to 1À2 : 1 and the alcohols consist of (a) 90 to 50 mol per cent of a polyol comprising an at least trihydric alcohol, and (b) 10 to 50 mol per cent of a non-phenolic monoalcohol having from 4 to 9 carbon atoms. Lacquers may be prepared from the air-drying alkyd resins together with conventional additives, e.g. fillers, pigments, driers and solvents. The example describes the preparation of an airdrying alkyd resin from phthalic anhydride, trimethylolpropane, cyclohexanol, soya oil fatty acid and hexahydrobenzoic acid and the preparation of a lacquer therefrom.
