Summary:The sulphur content of the liquid products from a catalytic cracking process is reduced by the use of a sulphur reduction catalyst comprising a porous molecular sieve which contains, with the interior pore structure of the sieve, (i) a first metal componet which has an oxidation state grater than zero, and (ii) a second metal component which comprises at least one rare earth metal. The molecular sieve is preferably a large-bore size zeolite such as a faujasite, for example, USY. The primary sulphur reduction component is normally a metal of Period 4 of the Periodic Table, preferably vanadium. The preferred rare earth metal is cerium, although lanthanum may be used alone or in combination with cerium. The sulphur reduction catalyst may be used in the form of separate particle additive or as part of a single combined/integrated cracking/sulphur catalyst.
