Summary:The component is placed in the capsule in a vacuum, the capsule having a tubular shape with radial holes near its open end; and a round plug is placed in the open end to seal the radial holes. The capsule is pref. made of a refractory metal, e.g. Mo, Nb, Ta, W; and the length (L) of the plug pref. corresponds with the average free path length of a mol. of the residual gas in the capsule. At least one third of the plug length (L) is solid where it enters the capsule; and the capsule is pref. heated in vacuo before inserting the plug, so a shrink fit is obtd. on cooling; an induction coil is pref. used for this heating operation. An inexpensive but reliable method of sealing the evacuated capsule is provided so gas cannot enter during cold or hot isostatic pressing.
