Summary:The invention concerns a method and an arrangement for plasma beam remelting of a superficial layer on a planar workpiece of metal with parallel side edges, wherein one forms a pool of molten metal on a workpiece placed in a mould by heating of the workpiece by using a plasma torch fed with a plasma-forming gas and electric current during simultaneous relative motion between the workpiece and the plasma torches along the parallel edges of the workpiece. To enable the creation of a better remelting at a faster work pace to achieve an even more faultless surface of the workpiece than heretofore, the invention now proposes that the workpiece 1 be placed horizontally in the mould in its starting position and the plasma torches 6 be arranged above the workpiece 1 in a row and perpendicular to its parallel edges 1a, 1b, so that the anode spots for the plasma torches 6a, 6b situated at the ends of the row of torches lie within the edges of the workpiece 1 to form a pool 8 of molten metal which extends between these edges, and during the course of the remelting the plasma torch 6 and the workpiece 1 are moved relative to each other in a horizontal plane to form a remelted layer with a thickness equal to the depth of the metal pool 8 on the entire surface of the workpiece 1 as the pool moves over it.
