Summary:1504794 Thermal storage apparatus; regenerative heat transfer systems COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974 31 May 1974] 7070/75 Headings F4U and F4K A thermal storage apparatus comprises a support 2 for a thermal storage material C, e.g. a eutectic mixture, over which a heattransporting fluid F is passed in direct contact therewith, whereby when hot fluid is passed over the material, the material melts and accumulates the latent heat of fusion, and when cold fluid is passed, the material solidifies and releases heat to the fluid. As shown in Fig. 1, the material C is supported in trays 2 covered by wire-fabric elements 4 in an enclosure 2 and a gas is passed from an inlet 10 to an outlet 12 by a blower 14. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, solid particles of the material C are supported on a filter 22 in a vessel E which communicates with a vessel E1 containing material C in the liquid state, the bottom of the vessel E1 being connected to the top of the vessel E by a pipe 30 containing a pump 32. In a heat storage operation, a fluid, heated in a heat exchanger C 1 , circulates in the vessel E, while melting part of the material C, and is returned to the heat exchanger by a pump 38. In a heat releasing operation, liquid material C from the vessel E1 is sprayed into the vessel E where it solidifies, giving up heat to the fluid which is circulated through the vessel E and through a heat exchanger C 2 . In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the fluid passes through a Venturi arrangement connected to the vessel E1 whereby liquid material C may be drawn from the vessel E1 and conveyed to the top of the vessel E. The material C may be a eutectic mixture of beryllium fluoride and lithium fluoride, and may be selected from the group comprising the fluorides, chlorides, oxides and hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals. The heat-transporting fluid may be a gas, e.g. air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen or may be a liquid selected from a group comprising water, the polyphenyls or their substituted derivatives, or from a group comprising potassium, sodium, alloys thereof, cadmium and gallium.
