Summary:1303949 Preparation of 4-oxocapronitrile STAMICARBON NV 3 Aug 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 36457/71 Heading C2C 4-Oxocapronitrile is prepared by reacting (preferably at 75-225‹ C.) acrylonitrile with an excess of acetone in the presence of a compound capable of giving an acid reaction in water (e.g. acid or suitable salt) and a catalyst comprising a Schiff base, boiling point below 150‹ C., derived from acetone and a primary aliphatic amine, or a mixture of said Schiff base and the amine from which it is derived, the molar ratio of acetone to acrylonitrile being at least 3 : 1. Preferred Schiff bases are N-isopropylacetonimine and N- sec.-butyl-acetonimine. Schiff base may be formed in situ by adding the amine to the mixture of acrylonitrile acetone and acid.
