Summary:Two sets of neutron detection instruments are placed within the core and used to measure neutron fluctuations which are represented electrically as noise signals. Initially, to calibrate the measurement system, the measurements are taken with the reactor running critical and the signals are passed through narrow band filters of identical centre frequency to a comparator feeding a computer in which a coherence function is calculated following a given formula based on statistical mean probabilities of coincidence and non-coincidence over the period of the measurement. A curve is then plotted starting from that point with different centre frequencies to derive the narrow-band filtered coherence curve. When the reactor is running operationally, the same noise signals are passed to the computer this time through wide band filters and the computer, produces continuous read-out of the reactivity using a formula also including as well as the asymptotic value, derived from the calibration curve of the coherence function, the measured coherence function calculated in the computer using a similar probability formula. The computer can also calculate standard deviation of reactivity.
