Heading C2C. 7 - Chloro - 2 - methylamino - 5 - phenyl - 5H- 1,4 - benzodiazepine - 4 - oxide (I) and its 3H isomer (II) are prepared by oxidizing 7-chloro-2- methylamino - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - phenyl - 4,5- dihydro-3H-1,4-benzodiazepine and separating the mixture obtained by fractional crystallization. (I) or the mixture of (I) and (II) may be converted to (II) by heating in a basic solution. (I) is a sedative, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing it together with a diluent or carrier.
