Compounds of formula are prepared by reacting with R 2 CH(CO 2 H) 2 or its reactive derivative either a phenylhydrazone (II) of formula or a N1,N2-diacylphenylhydrazine (V) of formula (V) is itself prepared by reacting (II) with R 7 CO 2 H or its reactive derivative. In these formulµ R 1 is H, halogen, NO 2 or C 1-4 -alkyl or -alkoxy; R 2 is C 1-6 alkyl; R 3 and R 4 are each H, C 1-4 alkyl or Ph (possibly substituted); R 5 and R 6 are each H, halogen, NO 2 , C 1-4 -alkyl or -alkoxy, haloalkyl or alkylated NH 2 , or R 5 +R 6 form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring fused to the adjacent benzene ring; and R 7 is C 1-3 alkyl. The following derivatives of 4-n-butyl-3,5-dioxopyrazolidine are claimed per se: 1-phenyl-2-styryl, 1-p-tolyl-2-styryl, 1-ptolyl - 2 -p - methoxystyryl, 1 - p - chlorophenyl- 2 - p methoxystyryl, and 1 - p - tolyl - 2 - (31,41-methylenedioxy)styryl. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,199,107.
