Summary:1,273,254. Compacting paper and the like. CLUPAK Inc. 12 Aug., 1969 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 40226/69. Headings D1S and D2A. Apparatus for compacting paper and the like comprises a hard-surfaced roller 11, an elastomeric-surfaced element 13 supported so that the element forms a pressure nip with the roller, means to drive the element so that the surface speed is less than the speed of the roller, the elastomeric element comprising means adapted to cause maximum elongation of the surface of the element, under nip loading, as the element passes through the nip, in a direction oblique to the axis of the hard-surfaced roller. The elastomeric-surfaced element may be a blanket or, as shown, a roll covering, preferably of rubber. The means adapted to cause maximum elongation may be inelastic fibres disposed obliquely, or grooves cut obliquely, to the edges of the belt or roll surfacing, or annular grooves cut at an oblique angle to the surface. The two rolls may be driven by separate motors (Fig. 2, not shown), or roll 11 may be driven and roll 12 electromagnetically braked. Two such apparatuses, arranged so that their maximum elongations are at right angles, may be arranged in the path of the paper.
