Summary:1,238,886. Tyre building machines. UNIROYAL ENGLEBERT FRANCE. 7 Oct., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 47438/68. Heading B7C. Apparatus for building an inextensible breaker-tread assembly, its transfer to an inflatable carcase support drum, and the shaping of the tyre is characterized by the provision of an expansible and contractible breaker building drum 39, movable in the direction of its axis D-D so that its mid-circumferential plane may lie in any of three positions indicated in Fig. la by the centre-line A-A, B-B and Q-Q, A-A and B-B being the centre-lines of the plies to be applied. In position A-A a first layer of ply material R1 is applied, from a spool 21 in a supply unit 11 (Unit A), by means of a transfer drum 121, being cut off by a ply severing device 251 (Unit B). The drum 39 is then moved by hydraulic actuators 157a (Fig. 7a) to position B-B where a second layer of ply material R is similarly applied, and a strip of tread material T is then superposed by means of a system of conveyer belts (Unit C). After movement of the breaker building drum to the third position of the cycle, Q-Q, an expansible and contractible transfer ring 50, mounted on a rotatable turret 42, carries the breaker-tread assembly to a position E-E surrounding a carcase-sidewall assembly C on an inflatable drum 52, the carcase having previously been coated with a solvent by a device 54 (Fig. 6a), where the carcase is shaped by inflation to adhere to the breakertread assembly. Both the transfer drums 12, 121 and the breaker building drum 39 may comprise magnetic surface portions to attract a magnetic constituent of the plies R, R1. (For Figures see next page.)
