Summary: | An ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in an aqueous medium containing a free radical catalyst and a colloidal suspension of a silsesquioxane having the unit general formula RSiO3/2, wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a phenyl radical, said silsesquioxane having a particle size in the range 10 to 1000 <\>rA. In Examples 1 to 3, 5 and 6, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate or styrene is polymerized in an emulsion containing methyl silsesquioxane and H2O2. Other combinations monomer, silsesquioxane and catalyst exemplified are (4) ethyl acrylate, phenyl silsesquioxane and H2O2; (7) styrene, vinyl silsesquioxane and azobisisobutyronitrile; (8), (9) and (10) styrene, methyl silsesquioxane and ammonium persulphate and (11) methyl methacrylate, vinyl silsesquioxane and H2O2. Mixtures of butadiene and styrene and of vinyl chloride and isoprene are other preferred monomers. |
