Summary:1,132,146. Liquid detergent composition. UNILEVER Ltd. 5 Oct., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 44457/66. Heading C5D. A liquid detergent composition comprises (a) from 2 to 35% by weight of an organic detergent, such as the detergent salts of organic sulphonic and sulphuric acids, nonionic condensates of ethylene oxide having detergent properties and cationic detergent compounds containing a quaternary nitrogen atom; (b) from 2 to 35% by weight of a water-soluble salt of an N-(2-hydroxyalkyl)-N-methyltaurine having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, the taurine salt being present in sufficient amount to ensure a homogeneous liquid, the composition being one that in the absence of the taurine salt normally gives more than one phase; (c) optionally, up to 20% by weight of a builder, such as a soluble alkaline phosphate; (d) optionally, up to 15%by weight of an organic amide of the formula R 1 CONR 2 R 3 wherein R 1 contains from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and R 2 and R 3 are each hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl radicals containing up to 5 carbon atoms, there being no more than one hydrogen attached to the nitrogen; (e) water and miscellaneous ingredients such as thickeners, fillers, soil suspending agents, dyes, perfumes, colorants, optical brighteners, germicides and opacifiers. Preferably, the alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts are employed for (b), these salts having particularly effective hydrotropic activity. The weight ratio of (b) to (a) is preferably between 9: 1 and 1 : 9.
