The invention relates to a method for determining the characteristics of a tree(100)and/or of the wood (3) of the tree(100). The method comprises the step:performing a measurement at a selected location on the tree(100),wherein the measurement comprises the steps of: exposing the location to electromagnetic radiation, detecting reflected and/or scattered electromagnetic radiation and generating a spectrum of the detected electromagnetic radiation. The method further comprises the following steps: analysing the result of the measurement, determining the characteristics of the tree(100) and/or of the wood (3) of the tree (100) based on the analysis of the result of the measurement. The measurement ismade on and/or in the bark (1, 2) of the tree(100),and the determination of the characteristics of the tree (100) and/or of the wood (3) of the tree (100) is made on a standing tree (100) or on a felled tree(100). The invention also relates to a device for determining the characteristics of a tree(100)and/or ofthe wood (3) of the tree(100).
