Summary:2-Methyl-pentane-2,4'-diol is prepd. by the hydrogenation of diacetone-alcohol in the presence of a Ni/kieselghur catalyst at 20-40 bar pressure and 70-90 deg. C. Opt. a promoter, with a slightly basic surface of Cr, Cu, or Mn may also be present. The use of unpurified di:acetone-alcohol with variable acetone content is possible as both yield and selectivity are increased by above method.
