Summary:1513493 Removal of nitrogen oxides HOECHST AG 7 June 1976 [5 June 1975] 23477/76 Heading C1A Nitrogen oxides (NO x , x = 1 or 2) are removed from a gas mixture by treating with an aqueous alkaline solution of thiosulphate of pH at least 8, at least 0À4 moles of S 2 O 3 2- per unit time being used per mole of NO x per unit time on the gas mixture before treatment. Specified thiosulphates are Na 2 S 2 O 3 , K 2 S 2 O 3 and (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 while the alkali may be NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH) 2 or Na 2 CO 3 . The pH of the solution is preferably at least 8À0. In Examples, air containing 1000-4000 ppm NO, is passed countercurrent to alkaline Na 2 S 2 O 3 solution in a bubble plate column.
