Compsns. for prolonging the effect or increasing the selectivity of herbicides based on 2-chloroacetamide derivs. (opt. also contg. a safener) comprise diamines of general formula (I): where R5-R8=H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl or 2-5C alkenyl opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl; R1=H or 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by halogen or phenyl. The herbicides are described in US2863752, 2864683 and 3442945 and DE2320340, e.g. propachlor, acetochlor, alachlor, butachlor, metolachlor, allidochlor and other cpds. of formuls ClCH2CONR1R2 (where R1=1-4C alkyl, 2-5C alkenyl, or phenyl opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl and/or halogen; R2 = 1-4C alkyl, 2-5C alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl or pyrazolylalkyl). The safeners are of formula Cl2CHCONR3R4 (where R3 and R4 = 2-4C alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl or N-alkenylcarbamoylalkyl, or NR3R4 is a 4- to 7-membered ring opt. contg. O and/or substd. by 1-3 Me gps. or a 5-6C spirocycloalkyl gp. in the 2 posn.). Prefd. cpds. (I) and N,N'-dialkyl-N,N'-dialkyl diaminomethanes and N,N,N',N'-tetraallyl diaminomethane (Ia). The ratio of herbicide to (I) is 1-25:1, esp. 6:1.
