Summary:Methods and apparatus to form biocompatible batteries are described. According to one aspect of the disclosure, a cathode spacer layer has a first hole and is attached to a first current collector coated with anode chemicals, thus defining a first cavity between sides of the first hole and a first surface of the first current collector. A separator layer is within the first cavity and helps to define a second cavity filled with cathode chemicals (842). A second current collector (816) is in contact with the cathode chemicals (842). The biocompatible battery may be a primary battery suitable for integration within a biomedical device such as an electroactive contact lens.
