Summary:A high temp. resistant covering, for interposition between tools and hot glass sheets, consists of a knitted fabric which has (a) columns of stitches forming at least one flat fabric face and (b) openings (C) with a polygonal shape determined by unjoined segments (s3, s4, s5, s6), each formed by a portion of a stitch column, and joined segments (s1, s2), formed by combining more than four stitches between two adjacent stitch columns, the combining being effected by mutual transfer of stitches from one column to the other. The fabric may consist of metallic threads, non-metallic threads (of ceramic, silicon carbide, polyimide or aromatic polyamide fibres) or a hybrid fabric of metal and non-metallic elementary fibres. Pref. at least some of the metallic elementary threads or fibres consist of a pref. austenitic stainless steel (esp. type 316L) contg. ≥ 17 (pref. 17-19) wt.% Cr, ≥ 12 (pref. 13-14) wt.% Ni and ≤ 0.03 wt.% C.
