Summary: | A smoking article 10, such as a cigarette, and wrappers for smoking articles having reduced ignition propensity are disclosed. The smoking article includes a column of tobacco 12, a wrapper 14 surrounding the tobacco 12, and a filter element 16. The wrapper 14 has an untreated area 20 and at least one discrete area 22 treated with a composition that includes a permeability reducing substance, a burn rate retarding substance and a burn rate accelerating substance. The treated area has a permeability less than the base permeability of the wrapper. The treated area 22 interacts with a coal of a burning tobacco firecone as it advances to self-extinguish the smoking article 10. Either the burn rate retarding substance or the burn rate accelerating substance acts as an organoleptic enchancing substance. In this way, a smoker's experience when smoking either the treated area 22 or the untreated area 20 is substantially the same. |
