Summary: | A device for impacting a penetrating member against the stratum corneum that comprises:- (a) A body (12) having a first end and a second end, the first end being adapted to receive the penetrating member; (b) A piston (14) slidably disposed within the body (12) for impacting the penetrating member against the stratum corneum; (c) An impact spring (20) adapted to provide an impact force to the piston (14) and bias the piston out of the first end of the body, wherein the impact spring (20) is energized when the piston is further disposed within the body; (d) A latching mechanism (22, 28) adapted to releasably engage the piston (14) with the body (12) by the use of a single hand after the piston (14) has been sufficiently disposed within the body (12); and (e) A releasing mechanism (46) for disengaging the latching mechanism (22, 28) whereby the impact spring (20) impacts the piston (14) against the penetrating member forcing the penetrating member into the stratum corneum. |
