Summary:A drum hoist is disclosed of the type which has a drive motor 16 with an output shaft 18 connected thereto. A mounting base 12 supports the motor and also a cable winding drum 30 mounted for rotation with respect to the base 12. The drum has a pair of flange sections 20, 24 at either end thereof. A planetary gear assembly which includes a ring gear 38 is located between the end flange sections 20, 24 of the drum and is coupled to said flange sections so that the ring gear rotates therewith whereby the outer surface of the ring gear 38 of the planetary gear system acts as a portion of the drum on which the cable is wound. A brake 45 is provided to inhibit rotation of the drum.
