Summary:1334354 Powder coating compositions from glycidyl copolymers FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 1 June 1972 [16 Aug 1971 (3)] 25646/72 Heading C3B and C3P [Also in Division B2] A powder coating composition comprises: (I) a polymer of 8-30% by wt. of glycidyl methacrylate and 92-70% by wt. of other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, having a glass transition temperature of 40-90‹C. and a number average molecular weight of 2500- 8500; (II) a cross-linking agent for I which is a saturated straight chain C 4-20 dicarboxylic acid optionally in admixture with 2-10 equivalent per cent of a saturated straight chain C 10-22 monocarboxylic acid or a carboxy terminated polymer, II being present so as to provide 0À8 to 1À1 carboxyl groups per epoxy group of I; and (III) at least 0À5% by wt. of the total composition of a flow control agent which is a polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least 1000 and having, at the baking temperature of the composition, a lower surface tension than that of the glycidyl copolymer. Typical I contain 8-30% by weight of glycidyl methacrylate, 92-35% by weight of methyl or butyl methacrylate or ethyl, butyl or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. Details are given for the preparation of a copolymer of 15% by wt. of glycidyl methacrylate, 45% by wt. butyl methacrylate and 40% butyl methacrylate using 2,21-azobis(2-methyl propionitrile) as initiator. II may be adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, undecandioic or brassylic acid optionally in admixture with lauric tridecanoic, myristic, pentadecanoic, palmitic, margaric or stearic acid. The carboxy terminated polymer may be derived by reacting an epoxy resin with 1À5-3À0 equivalents of a saturated dicarboxylic acid. III may be polylauryl, polybutyl or poly(2- ethylhexyl) acrylate or polylauryl or polyisodecyl methacrylate or it may be an ester of a fluorinated fatty acid with polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol. The composition may additionally contain a catalyst, e.g. a quaternary ammonium compound. From 0À05-1% by wt. of an antistatic agent and from 6-35% by wt. of pigment may also be present.
