Summary:The invention relates to an improved method for coating a cheese, wherein a cheese coating composition comprising lactic acid polymer, is applied to a surface of the cheese, wherein the cheese coating composition (i) does not comprise an added source of lactic acid bacteria, and/or (ii) comprises free carboxylic acid and/or free carboxylate groups, preferably free carboxylic acid groups, in a total concentration of 0.001 - 5 mol/1. The invention also relates to the conesponding cheese coating composition, use thereof for coating cheese and the coated cheeses. It was found that the cheese coating compositions according to the invention are an excellent renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to petrochemical-based coatings such as polyvinyl acetate coatings.
