Carbonyl sulfide is prepared by a process wherein carbon monoxide is caused to bubble through molten sulfur maintained at a temperature of from 300 DEG to 440 DEG C; and, the resulting gaseous mixture is maintained at a reaction temperature exceeding 510 DEG C but no higher than 650 DEG C.
