Summary:The present invention provides a maximum power point tracking system (100) comprising: a photovoltaic array (110), that generates a varying output voltage; a buck/boost converter (120), to step up or step down the output voltage from the photovoltaic array (110) and supply the output voltage to an electrical load or inverter; a maximum power point tracking controller (130), generates a reference voltage based on the output voltage; a control loop, calculates error between the output voltage of the photovoltaic array (110) and the generated reference voltage; a pulse width modulation generator (150), generates a switching signal for the buck/boost converter (120); and a proportional integral derivative controller (140), to optimize the output voltage with the reference voltage, whereby based on the calculated error, the proportional integral derivative controller (140) performs self-tuning process to calculate duty ratio for the switching signal to be generated by the pulse width modulation generator (150) by using a particle swarm optimization algorithm, in order to control the switching state in the buck/boost converter (120).
