HYBRID VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE SYSTEM
A hybrid vertical axis wind turbine (100) including a rotor assembly (80) having a Darrieus rotor (10) and a Savonius rotor (20), each rotor (10, 20) being revolve-able about a common axis of rotation of a shaft member (12), with the Savonius rotor (20) coupled to the Darrieus rotor (10) to initiate...

Summary: | A hybrid vertical axis wind turbine (100) including a rotor assembly (80) having a Darrieus rotor (10) and a Savonius rotor (20), each rotor (10, 20) being revolve-able about a common axis of rotation of a shaft member (12), with the Savonius rotor (20) coupled to the Darrieus rotor (10) to initiate or maintain rotation of the Darrieus rotor (10) under low wind speed conditions; wherein the hybrid vertical axis wind turbine (100) further comprises a governor mechanism (30) coupled to the Darrieus rotor (10) and having a first pair of arms (30a, 30), that are each adapted for receiving one or more weights (31), the governor mechanism (30) further including a clutch assembly (40) that acts in cooperation with the first pair of arms (30a, 30b) via a second pair arms (30c, 30d) to enable engaging the Savonious rotor (10) to the Darrieus rotor (20) when said rotors (10, 20) are initiated into rotational motion and further enable disengaging of the Savonius rotor (10) from the Darrieus rotor (20) when a desired tip speed ratio is achieved.
