The present invention relates to novel proanthocyanidin compounds extracted from Btechnum orientate Linn, which exhibit antioxidative, antibacterial and anticancer properties. Another aspect of the invention relates to the method of isolation of the proanthocyanidins from Btechnum orientate. Yet another further aspect of the present invention relates to the applications of the proanthocyanidin compounds for use as a therapeutic agent for antioxidative, antibacterial and colon cancer treatment. The compounds recorded excellent radical scavenging activity, bactericidal activity against five Gram-positive bacteria, inclusive of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and selected cytotoxicity towards colon cancer cells.
