Summary:A driving assistance device (2) includes a brake controller (5) and an arithmetic processor (4). The brake controller (5) executes avoidance brake control to avoid collision by keeping a predetermined distance to an obstacle, based on a time to collision. The brake controller (5) also executes mitigation brake control to mitigate damage caused by collision with the obstacle, when the relative speed is higher than an avoidance limit relative speed, if a deceleration index concerning deceleration of the vehicle is not larger than a predetermined value. The avoidance limit relative speed is a maximum relative speed at which collision is avoidable by keeping a predetermined distance to the obstacle. The arithmetic processor (4) calculates execution timing of the mitigation brake control by the brake controller (5), based on the distance between the own vehicle 1 and the obstacle at the execution timing of the avoidance brake control at the avoidance limit relative speed. Further, the arithmetic processor (4) corrects the execution timing of the mitigation brake control, based on the deceleration of the own vehicle (1). Thereby, it is possible to execute both the collision avoidance control between the own vehicle and the obstacle and the damage mitigation control at the time of collision, and to perform switching between both types of control smoothly.
