A bill handling apparatus can acquire image information of improper bills without the necessity for drawing out the improper bills from an improper bill vault and conveying them again. The bill handling apparatus includes an identification information acquisition unit (163) for acquiring identification information(600, 750) of the bills handled as an identification objects, an image information acquisition unit (161) for acquiring a surface image of at least one of the surfaces of the bill as image information, an improper bill vault (172) or storage box for storing improper bills identified as improper by the identification information acquisition unit, a storing unit (206) for storing the image information, and a controlling unit (200) for storing the image information of the bills identified as the improper bills by the identification of the identification information acquisition unit in the handling process, in the storing unit.
