The invention relates to a method of preparing microcrystalline lutein formulations, particularly in the form of esters, which are oxidation stable and which are soluble in hydrophilic and lipophilic media. For this purpose, the lutein esters are mixed with antioxidants, vegetable oils and/or organic solvents, said initial mixture being subjected to various steps according to the type of formulation ultimately desired. Said formulations can be used directly as colouring agents as well as in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic fields. Moreover, the formulations can also be used as nutritional supplements. La presente invencion describe un procedimiento de preparacion de formulaciones de luteina microcristalina, particularmente en forma de esteres, estables a la oxidacion y solubles en medios hidrofilicos y/o lipofilicos. Para ellos los esteres de luteina se mezclan con antioxidantes, aceites vegetales y/o disolventes organicos, siendo esta mezcla inicial sometida a diversas etapas segun el tipo de formulacion que finalmente se desee obtener. Estas formulaciones son de aplicacion directa como colorantes tanto en los campos farmaceutico, alimentario y en cosmetica. Asimismo pueden utilizarse como suplementos nutricionales.
