Summary:An optical fiber with a core of non circular cross section is realized by a method including the steps of creating a void having the desired cross section in a preform housing and filling the void with an optical material. This structure is then collapsed to solidify it and drawn to desired dimensions. The optical material may be rods, soot or ground material. An active region which may be provided in the core does not necessarily have a different refractive index than that of immediately adjacent material. The active region of the drawn fiber may only support oscillation in the fundamental transverse mode. The fiber drawn by the method disclosed may be used to convert multi mode pump light into single mode light, e.g., for pumping a single mode amplifier. Se realiza una fibra optica con un nucleo de seccion transversal no circular, mediante un metodo que incluye los pasos de crear un vacio que tiene la seccion transversal deseada en un alojamiento de preforma y llenar el vacio con un material optico; se aplasta luego esta estructura para solidificarla y se estira a las dimensiones deseadas; el material optico puede consistir en varillas, hollin o material molido; una region activa que se puede proveer en el nucleo no tiene necesariamente indice de refraccion diferente al del material inmediatamente adyacente; la region activa de la fibra estirada puede soportar solamente la oscilacion en el modo transversal fundamental; se puede usar la fibra estirada mediante el metodo expuesto, para convertir luz de bombeo de modos multiples a luz de modo sencillo, por ejemplo para bombear un amplificador de modo sencillo.
