Summary:4-Mercaptobutyramides N-mono or N,N-disubstituted by a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl radical, characterised in that they correspond to the following general formula: in which: R1 denotes a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl radical or a monohydroxyalkyl or polyhydroxyalkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms which are optionally interrupted by an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom, and R2 denotes a monohydroxylalkyl or polyhydroxylalkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms which are optionally interrupted by an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom, or R1 and R2 taken together with the nitrogen atom form a piperazine ring substituted in the 4 position by a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and their corresponding disulphides. Use of these compounds as reducing agents in a process for permanent deformation of hair.
