Summary: | The invention resides in a nonfibrous composition of matter for improving the fire resistance of flammable polymeric materials comprising a carbonaceous material having an LOI value of greater than 40, a thermal conductivity of less than 1 BTU(ft/hr)(ft )( DEG F) [1.72 w/m (K)], and which produces a char formation greater than 65 percent. Further embodiments include articles comprising a flammable polymeric material and a synergistic amount of the carbonaceous material in intimate contact therewith, and a fire barrier structure comprising a combination of a carbonaceous foam reinforced with carbonaceous fibers. Optionally the embodiments of the invention include an organosilicone polymer in an amount of from 0.5 to 90 percent by weight. |
