Summary:The method for preparing 3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy pyridine-N-oxide of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting 3,5-dimethyl pyridine-N-oxide of formula (III) with a halogenating agent 50 obtain 3,5-dimethyl-4-halopyridine-N-oxide of formula (II); and (b) reacting (II) with a base. In the formulas, X = chloro or bromo. The halogenating agent is N-halosuccinimide of formula (IV). And the base is pref. claisen base (KOH-MeOH- H2O). The cpd. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the prodn. of omeprazole.
