Summary:A tryptophan is purified by (a) passing a reaction liquid prepd. from an unreacted indole by an emzymatic reaction through a porous cation exchange resin layer to adsorb tryptophan onto the exchange part while adsorbing the indole onto the porouds part of the resin, and (b) eluting the adsorbed tryptophan with an aq. soln of an alkali or acid. The indole content of the tryptophan mixt. is pref. 10ppm or less.
