Summary:An object is examined by a scanning device using penetrating radiation. The device has a rotating drum carrying at least one radiation source. An adjustable shutter is concentric with the structure carrying the source. A radiation detector is arranged on a fixed part of the device, and surrounds the rotating drum. The system may use X-rays or gamma-rays for examining objects, e.g. hot steel sheet, by computer-aided tomography. Radiation protection is provided, and the mechanism is able to withstand the use of red-hot steel sections as objects to be examined.
