Summary:Continuous prodn. of oxalic acid diester(I) comprises (a) passing gas contg. CO and an ester of a C1-8 monohydric aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol with N2O into a reactor packed with a solid catalyst, comprising a Pt gp.metal or its salt, and reacting them at 50-200 C at a pressure from ambient to 10 kg/sq.cm; (b) passing the prod. to a condenser where it is sepd. into N2O-contg. gas and liq. contg. (I); (C) passing the gas from step (b) to a regeneration column where it is contacted with a gas contg. O2 and an alcohol to regenerate N2O gas and give an NO concn. of 2-7 vol.% and;(d) recycling the gas from (c) to step (a).
