Summary:A method for immobilizing nuclear waste comprises (A) preparing a compsn. contg. (1) a 30-85 wt.% silicon compd., SiRm(OR')nXp or Si(OSiR3)4; (2) a 5-30 wt.% sodium compd., NaOR" or NaZR'3; (3) a 30 wt.% aluminum compd., AlR'g(OR")rXs or Mg(Al(OR)4)2; and (4) a 5-30 wt.% mixt. of one of boron compd., BR'q(OR")rXs, alkaline earth metal compd., MRt(OR")uXv, and a lithium compd., LiOR: (B) then, at least partially hydrolyzing said compsn.; (C) mixing said compsn. with an equal amt. of nuclear waste at 500 C until the mixt. is dry and organics have been removed; and (D) melting said mixt. at 800-1300 C.
