Summary:Maintaining the efficacy of ferrous ions in the reductive stripping of uranyl ions from organic extractant is described. The extractant contacts wet process phosphoric acid that has been oxidized with nitric acid and nitrate ions. The method comprises adding urea to the oxidized phosphoric. acid before contacting the mixt. with extractant. Also claimed is the recovery of uranium from wet process phosphoric acid where the phosphoric acid is oxidized with nitric acid to provide uranyl ions in the acid. Addn. of urea prevents unwanted extn. or carry-over of nitrate and/or nitrate ions into the extractant.
