Summary:Title compds. [I; X = H, halogen or cyano group, Z = H, alkoxy group (C1-6), carboxyl group and its salt or alkyl carboxylate (C1-4) , useful as a herbicide, were prepd. by the reaction of halotoluene (II) with 3-substituted phenols (III) in the presence of alkali, then nitrating. Thus, potassium hydrate and nitrophenol were melted in methanol and reacted with 4-chloro-3-cyano-α, α, α-trifluorotoluene to give 2-cyano-α, α, α -trifluorop-toryl-4-nitrophenylether.
