The present technology relates to a memory apparatus for performing refresh and an operating method thereof. The memory apparatus comprises: a memory area including a plurality of word lines; a self-refresh command generation circuit which generates a self-refresh command at each set period in a self-refresh period; a refresh checking circuit which generates a proportion signal by checking the proportion of word lines that are refreshed in response to the self-refresh command among the plurality of word lines; a proportion control circuit which adjusts, according to the proportion signal, the proportion of application commands to be used in a refresh operation and commands to be skipped among a plurality of auto refresh commands input from the outside in an auto refresh period; and a refresh operation circuit which performs a refresh operation of the plurality of word lines in response to the self-refresh command and the application commands.
